Choosing between a LAF bench and a Class II cabinet
They are not interchangeable, and the difference matters for safety. A laminar flow bench protects the product: filtered air moves across the work and out toward the operator. A Class II cabinet protects the product, the operator and the room, because the air leaving the cabinet is filtered too. If there is any biological hazard in the work, the answer is a Class II cabinet, not a LAF bench — and we will say so even when the LAF bench is cheaper.
Certification and the annual schedule
Every unit we supply is performance-tested and certified at installation, and we put the annual re-certification in a schedule and remind you before it lapses. An expired certificate is one of the fastest ways to fail an inspection.

What is the difference between a laminar flow bench and a biosafety cabinet?
A laminar flow bench protects the product only: filtered air is pushed over the work toward the operator. A Class II biosafety cabinet protects the product, the operator and the environment, because the air is drawn in through a front grille and exhausted through a HEPA filter. If your work involves any biological agent, you need a cabinet, not a bench.
How often does a Class II cabinet have to be certified?
Annually as a minimum, and again after any relocation, filter change or repair. Certification covers downflow and inflow velocity, HEPA filter integrity, airflow smoke patterns and, where fitted, alarms. We schedule and carry out recertification for cabinets we supply and for existing units.
Horizontal or vertical flow — which do I need?
Horizontal flow suits media plating and instrument protection where nothing hazardous is handled. Vertical flow suits work with powders or anything you do not want blown toward the operator, and it is easier to enclose. Tell us the process and we will specify it.
Can a laminar flow bench be installed on existing casework?
Yes, provided the bench is load-rated and level. Most units need a stable worktop, a dedicated circuit and clearance above for the filter change. We check the existing bench before quoting and supply a support frame where the worktop is not suitable.
