Lab Consulting

The cheapest hour you will spend on a laboratory project is the one before anybody draws anything.

Get the assumptions right before the drawings start

Most laboratory projects that go over budget do not go over because of construction. They go over because the brief was wrong: the hood count was guessed, the exhaust capacity of the building was never checked, the growth plan was not in the room, or a compliance requirement surfaced after the walls were up.

Consulting is where we test those assumptions. We walk the space, read your processes and your chemistry, look at what the building can actually supply, and give you a written position on what is achievable, what it will cost, and where the risk sits — whether or not you go on to build with us.

What you receive

  • A written feasibility and constraints report on the space
  • Capacity model — bench metres, hood count and storage, sized to your throughput and growth plan
  • Equipment strategy: what to buy, what to move, what to retire
  • Order-of-magnitude budget with the assumptions stated line by line
  • Compliance review against CSA Z316.5, SEFA and NFPA 30 requirements
  • A phasing option if the work has to happen around live operations

How this service runs

  • 01Walk the spaceWe visit, measure and photograph, and talk to the people who actually work in the room — not only the person commissioning the project.
  • 02Read the processChemistry, volumes, instruments, sample flow and headcount. This is what decides hood count and worktop material, and it is what most briefs leave out.
  • 03Test the buildingAvailable exhaust and make-up air, electrical capacity, floor loading, ceiling void, access routes for equipment. Constraints found now are cheap.
  • 04Model the optionsTwo or three viable configurations with cost and consequence for each, rather than a single answer presented as the only one.
  • 05Write it downA report you can take to your board, your landlord or your funding body — with the assumptions visible so they can be challenged.

When to bring us in

The best moment is before the lease is signed or the floor plate is chosen. The second-best is before the architect finalises the mechanical brief. We are still useful after that, but the cheap decisions have already been made.

Independent of the build

Consulting is quoted separately from construction. If our advice is that you should stay where you are, or reuse the casework you have, we will say so — and you will have a written report either way.

Send us the drawings. We'll send back a layout and a number.

Attach a floor plan, an equipment list, a mechanical drawing — or even a phone photo of the room as it stands today. Within five business days you'll have a marked-up layout and a budget price. No charge, no obligation.
