Lab Renovation
Upgrades, hood replacements and full refits carried out in phases, inside a building that has to keep running while we work.
Most laboratories cannot simply close
Samples keep arriving, deadlines do not move, and an audit is usually somewhere on the calendar. Renovation in a live laboratory is a scheduling problem as much as a construction one — and that is the part most contractors underestimate.
We phase the work: survey and drawings first, then agreed shutdown windows, containment and dust control during the messy stages, out-of-hours installation where it is the only way, and each zone commissioned and returned to service before the next one starts.

How this service runs
- 01SurveyWe measure what is there, test what still performs, and tell you plainly what is worth keeping. Sound casework can often be re-topped rather than replaced.
- 02Phase itThe room is divided into zones with a sequence and dates, agreed with the people who have to keep working in it.
- 03ContainHoardings, negative-pressure containment, dust extraction and protection of the equipment that stays. This is where a laboratory renovation is won or lost.
- 04ReplaceRemoval and installation inside the agreed window, with the new unit connected and the services re-tested before the zone reopens.
- 05Re-commissionEach zone gets its own face-velocity traverse, alarm verification and containment test, and its own signed report.
- 06Return to serviceThe zone goes back to work before the next one starts, so you are never without the whole laboratory.
The most common renovation we do
A hood that will not hold containment any more, in a room that cannot be shut down. Usually the hood is not the whole problem — the exhaust fan, the ductwork or the make-up air has drifted with the building. We survey the system before quoting a replacement, because replacing the hood alone into an unbalanced system produces a new hood that also fails.
Retopping and refurbishment
Where the cabinet bodies are sound, replacing worktops, sinks, fixtures and hardware costs a fraction of a full replacement and can be done in a fortnight. We will tell you when that is the right answer, even though it is the smaller order.
